ABOUT DIANE
Painting is my passion.
When I was nineteen years old I travelled to Skye, and the island became the magical place that
continues to influence my creative process, and my lifelong exploration and discovery of new
pathways and evolution of image making.
The paints and surfaces that I choose are in response to Skye's extraordinary changing colours,
stunning and nearly otherworldly light, and the contrast of fierce and sensuous land forms - all
essential to the nourishment of my growth as an artist.
Nowadays, I use a variety of papers, acrylic, mica, crushed pigments, interference and duochrome
acrylics. I never forget the lyrical nature of drawing with a suggestion of line, the curve
of a pencil point or the brash, bold side of a handmade pastel.
My influences range from Rembrandt to Matisse, the Scottish Colourists to Roualt, Joan Mitchell
to David Hockney; Georgia O'Keefe to Helen Frankenthaler; and photographers, Ansel Adams
and the American mountaineer/photographer, Bradford Washburn : and my students - for their
vision, their daring and passion.
I do not try to replicate nature or objects as I did in my classical art student days.
Now, I respond not only to what I see, but what I feel. And am happiest when I can share the
freedom and joy of painting intuitively whether in nature or in the studio.
